André Villas- Boas

Luís André de Pina Cabral e Villas Boas, short André Villas -Boas (born 17 October 1977 in Porto, Portugal) is a Portuguese football coach.

Origin, Family and Education

Villas- Boas was the second of four children of the engineer Luís Villas- Boas ( born 1952 ) and his wife Maria Silva ( born 1951 ) was born in Porto on 17 October 1977. His English grandmother Margaret Kendall had moved with her mother to Portugal to trade with wine. His great-uncle José Rui Villas- Boas was Viscount of Guilhomil. His brother is actor João.

Since 2004, Villas- Boas is married to Joana Maria Noronha de Ornelas Teixeira and the couple have two daughters (* 2009, 2010 ).

As a child he developed sympathies for FC Porto, but he realized early on that it would not be enough for a professional career. At age 16, he found out that the then coach of Porto, Bobby Robson, lived with him in the apartment block. This arranged for Villas- Boas after a conversation in which Robson et al noticed his good English, eventually obtaining the FA Coach qualification and the UEFA C coaching license. Later, the young André still got the B, A and the UEFA Pro Licence, under the direction of Jim Fleeting.

Coaching career

Villas- Boas started with 23 years of his career as a professional football coach with the national team of the British Virgin Islands. After two defeats - with 1:5 and 0:9 against the Bermudan national team - he was released and returned to Porto. He then worked for five seasons (2003 to 2008) permanent member of the coaching staff of José Mourinho. He accompanied him even after the successful time at FC Porto for English club Chelsea and four years later, to the Italian club Inter Milan. His duties on the coaching staff included the analysis of the opposing players and the talent search.

At the end of the game season 2007/ 08 he expressed the desire to take care of a professional association as the main responsible coach. He was assisted by José Mourinho. On 13 October 2009 he was hired by the Portuguese club Académica Coimbra as a coach. Here it turned the then 31 -year-olds the task of leading the hitherto last-place club out of the relegation zone. With an eleventh place (with 16 teams), this goal was achieved.

Still left Villas-Boas Coimbra at the end of the season. On 2 June 2010 he received a post in the new coach FC Porto, where he replaced the previously successful Jesualdo Ferreira. Villas- Boas won in his first season with Porto four titles. In addition to the Portuguese Super Cup, which was won earlier in the season, he became a master of the league with 21 points ahead of Benfica. In addition, the FC Porto reached under Villas-Boas, the UEFA Europa League final, which was won with a 1-0 in the first all- Portuguese final against SC Braga. The fourth and final title of the season came in the Portuguese Cup final with a 6-2 against Vitória Guimarães. At the end of this successful season, Villas- Boas resigned as coach of FC Porto on 21 June 2011. A day later, he was appointed coach at Chelsea. After eight months of work as a trainer at Chelsea he was released on March 4, 2012 due to failure of his office. His assistant coach Roberto Di Matteo took over the team on an interim basis and led them to titles in the FA Cup 2011/ 12 and the UEFA Champions League 2011 /12.

Prior to the 2012/13 season Villas- Boas became head coach at Tottenham Hotspur. He signed a contract with a term of three years until 30 June 2015. During his first season he won with the Spurs 72 points and finished the season ranked fifth in the Europa League, he retired after with Tottenham in the quarter-final against FC Basel penalty shoot- out. On December 16, 2013 at his engagement ended Hotspur by mutual agreement.

Mid- March 2014, he joined the successor of Luciano Spalletti at Zenit St Petersburg.
