André Weßels

André Wessels ( born October 21, 1981 in Recklinghausen ) is a German fencer and world champion. In addition, he is a multiple World Cup winner in singles and with the team as well as multiple German team champion. He belonged to the A-team of the fencer and fight for the Olympic Fencing Club Bonn ( Bonn OFC ).

He is a sports soldier ( rank Sergeant ) in the sports promotion group of the Bundeswehr in Cologne.

Career

From 1998 to 2001 he achieved many successes at junior level. He was, among other things, four times Junior World Champion, World Cup winner of the Junior 2001 Junior Athlete of the Year in 2001 and won several medals at the European Junior Championships. 2000 and 2001 he won the German Championship of assets in the foil individual still in the junior age. At the World Championships in Lisbon, he won individual silver and gold with the team. He was then elected DFB fencer of the year 2002. A year later at the World Championships in Havana, he won again bronze with the team. The 2004 Olympics he finished in 24th place in the individual and in a team to sixth place.

He started up in 2008 for the fencing club Tauberbischofsheim, from June 2008 then for the Olympic Fencing Club Bonn. After that, it was a little quiet around him, in Plovdiv in individual until he took the bronze medal at the European Championships Fencing 2009. 2011 Weßels won at the World Championships in Catania bronze with the team. At the European Championships 2012 in Legnano he took the team bronze. With the team he won in the men's foil at the 2012 Olympic Games bronze. Actually only intended as a substitute, he had in the fight for third place against the United States after an injury by Sebastian Bachmann stand in for them and helped to secure the victory.
