Andreas Furtwängler

Andreas Ernst Gottfried Furtwängler ( born November 11, 1944 in Zurich ) is a German classical archaeologist and numismatist.

Furtwängler was awarded his doctorate in 1973 at the University of Heidelberg with an assisted by Herbert A. Cahn work on Greek Numismatics and worked from 1976 to 1981 as a lecturer at the German Archaeological Institute, Athens Department, then at the Institute of Archaeology, University of Saarbrücken. In 1991 he was habilitated there. From 1994 until his retirement in 2010 he was Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Halle.

From 1993 to 2003 he led excavations and surveys by in Georgia; Since 2002, he digs in the sanctuary of Didyma. Furtwängler is a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute.

Andreas E. Furtwängler, the son of conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler and Elizabeth, widowed Ackermann, born Albert (1910-2013), is a grandson of the archaeologist Adolf Furtwängler. He is married and has three children.
