Andrew Maynard (boxer)

Andrew Maynard ( born April 8, 1964 in Laurel, Maryland ) is a retired American boxer.

Amateur

Maynard was the 1987 and 1988 U.S. Amateur champion in the light heavyweight division. At the Pan American Games 1987 in Indianapolis, he took a third place.

In the Olympic excretion he suggested, among others, Al Cole and was thus able to qualify for the Olympic Games in Seoul. There he won with victories against the Samoans Mikaele Masoe, the Hungarian Lajos Eros, the Poles Henryk Petrich and in the final against Nurmagomed Schanawasow from the Soviet Union the gold medal.

Professional

In 1989 he joined the professional camp. After twelve fights he joined in June 1990 against former world champion Bobby Czyz and went in the seventh round knockout. After a few more victories, including an early success against Matthew Saad Muhammad, he went in January 1992 against Frank Tate, another Olympic champion, KO again. On October 16, 1993, he then received an undeserved World Cup cruiserweight fight against WBC titlist Anaclet Wamba, who clearly defeated him on points and had on the ground.

Later, he lost against the French Nicoletta and went against Egerton Marcus KO. An aging Thomas Hearns won against him by a first-round knockout, including former Olympic champion Torsten May struck him prematurely. In 2000, he finished after 13 defeats in forty battles his career.
