Andrew Melville

Andrew Melville, latin Melvinus ( born August 1, 1545 Baldowie, Angus, † 1622 in Sedan ) was a Scottish theologian and religious leaders.

Life

After Melville had studied in France and in 1568 taught at the Academy of Geneva, he returned after six years returned to Scotland; and became in 1574 Rector of the University of Glasgow and St. Mary College, University of St Andrews ( 1580). As chairman of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, he had disputes with the Scottish king James VI. and had to leave Scotland in 1584. Melville came back in 1585, gained his post and in 1590 rector of St. Andrews. 1606 he was appointed to London for a discussion of the Scottish Church, arrested him and detained him there four years for his sharp attack on the Church of England in the Tower of London a. He was responsible for many reforms to the consolidation of Scottish Presbyterianism and died in France as a professor of theology at Sedan.
