History

Android is a software for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications. The Android SDK provides the tools and APIs to develop available to mobile applications that run on Android -based devices. The Android Developer Challenge was a competition for the most innovative application for Android. Google offered $ 10 million in prize money, which were divided between ADC I and ADC II.

All entries were selected by a jury of experts from all sectors of the mobile industry (Handset manufacturers, mobile telecommunications, software development or technological innovation) assessed. Google, the jury of the member organizations of the Open Handset Alliance, Google, and experts in the mobile business.

Android Developer Challenge I

The Android Developer Challenge was first announced in November 2007, with a term of January 2 to April 14, 2008. Participants from over 70 countries submitted a total of 1,788 applications. Thus, the ADC became an instant success, and the Android Developer Blog reported from 170 entries per hour on April 14.

On May 13, the 50 finalists were presented.

The finalists were given a deadline of 30 June 2008 to prepare their submissions for finals. The ADC I ended the publication of the 10 winners of the main prizes, which received $ 275,000 each, and ten teams that received $ 100,000 each.

What is interesting about this competition was that Google published new versions of the SDK for the entire duration of the competition. It was therefore of interest to developers on the one hand to be closely into the development of an operating system while, on the other hand, changes to the code were constantly required to adapt the software to be submitted to the currently latest SDK. Another difficulty was that there were no Android phones at this time. The first Android phone, the G1, was not published until October 20, 2008 in the U.S.. All of the 50 winners were presented at this launch.

Android Developers Challenge II

ADC II was presented on May 27, 2009. New to the ADC II were 10 specific categories:

  • Education / Reference
  • Games: Casual / Puzzle
  • Games: Arcade / Action
  • Social Networking
  • Lifestyle
  • Productivity / Tools

  • Misc

The winners of ADC II were released on November 30. Sweet Dreams, What the Doodle! ? and WaveSecure were overall winners.
