Andrzej Karweta

Andrzej Karweta ( born June 11, 1958 in Jelen, Jaworzno; † 10 April 2010 Smolensk, Russia) was a Polish vice admiral.

Biography

After attending high school, " Stanisław Staszic " ( Liceum Ogólnokształcące ) Chrzanów he began in 1977 training at the Naval Academy ( Akademia marynarki Wojennej ) in Gdynia, where he graduated as a marine engineer with a Master of Engineering ( M.Eng. ). At the same time he received the officer's commission as a lieutenant in the Polish Navy ( Marynarka Wojenna Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej ).

As such, it was first used in the 13th Mine Countermeasure Division in Hel and in connection with the 9 coastal flotilla " Rear Admiral Włodzimierz Steyer ". 1986 he was appointed commander of the minesweeper ORP " Czapla " the ship class F- 206. Later he was commander of the minesweeper ORP " Mewa " and then completed a leadership course at the Naval Academy. After a course in surgery and tactics at the Institute for staff officers of the Naval Academy, he was between 1992 and 1996 Chief of Staff of the 13th Division mine countermeasures.

After another course at the Institute for staff officers of the Naval Academy in 1997, he served as commander of the International minesweeper unit during maneuvers U.S. BALTOPS 2000 in the Baltic Sea. 2002 he was appointed Deputy Commander of the submarine units of the naval forces of NATO in the Atlantic ( SACLANT ) in Norfolk ( Virginia).

After his return in 2005 he was first deputy commander of the 8th Küstenverteidigungsflottille " Kazimierz Porębski " in Świnoujście. After he graduated in 2006 a course in Defence Policy at the National Defence Academy ( Akademia Obrony Narodowej ) in Warsaw. After a further course at the Royal College of Defence Studies ( RCDS ) in London, he was promoted on 3 May 2007 to Rear Admiral and appointed Deputy Chief of Staff of the Navy in Gdynia.

After his promotion to vice admiral on 8 November 2007, he was appointed by President Lech Kaczyński Commander in Chief of the Polish Navy on 11 November 2007.

On April 10, 2010 Karweta belonged to a Polish delegation headed by President Lech Kaczyński, who was to travel on the occasion of the seventieth anniversary of the Katyn massacre to the memorial to Russia. However, in a plane crash of the delegation near the military airfield Smolensk - North he came together with other high-ranking representatives of Poland died.

For his services he was awarded several times and received the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland. In 2010 he was posthumously appointed commander of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
