Angelic Upstarts

Angelic Upstarts is a Oi - and punk band from South Shields, England. Many of their lyrics deal with themes of the political left and the interests and problems of the working class.

History

Angelic Upstarts was founded in 1977 by Thomas " Mensi " Mens Forth (vocals), Ray " Moon " Cowie (guitar ), Steve Forsten (bass) and Decca Wade ( drums). In the years of its existence, the band had a strongly fluctuating occupation.

The debut single from 1979, Murder of Liddle Towers, themed police brutality; produced in the same year Jimmy Pursey of Sham 69, the first album Upstarts Teenage Warning; with this and the following We Gotta Get Outta This Place reached the Upstarts to popularity. The album Reason Why? 1983 is considered by many as the best of the bunch.

In the early years of the band were at the concerts of the Upstarts often violent clashes with right-wing extremist skinheads, who were attracted by both the Oi! - Music and its working class symbolism, as well as of a temporary playing of the band with Nazi symbols. There were (unsuccessful ) attempts by collection of the extreme right -wing British National Front, although the band saw itself from the outset as part of the ( left ) labor movement and strictly antifascist acted.

In August 2006, Thomas Mens Forth left as the last founding member of the band and Chris White took over the vocals. Decca Wade, also a founding member, returned to the drums.
