Ann Jones (tennis)

Ann Haydon -Jones CBE, born Adrianne Shirley Haydon, ( born October 7, 1938 in Birmingham) is a former British tennis player.

Career

Her parents Adrian and Doris Haydon (born Jordan ) were well-known table tennis player and so they began with the table tennis game that gave this but later on, and evolved into a tennis player. 1954 and 1955 she won the British Youth Championships. She played tennis at a time when many of the greatest tennis players were active. These included Billie Jean King, Margaret Smith Court and Maria Bueno.

Ann Haydon won the 1961 French Open and reached the final of the U.S. Open, where she defeated the reigning champion Darlene Hard. In 1962 she married PF Jones and won as Ann Haydon -Jones, the 1966 French Open for the second time.

In 1967, she achieved both at Wimbledon and at the U.S. Open, the final, but lost each of Billie Jean King. Two years later, the two players met again in the finals at Wimbledon, where this time Ann Haydon -Jones was victorious. At the same tournament they also won the Mixed Competition with Fred Stolle. During the Women's Single Page, 1969 in Wimbledon, the Beatles broke the recording of the song " Golden Slumbers " to listen to the live broadcast on the radio, as Jones Billie Jean King beat. In the same year she became the BBC Sports Personality of the Year, Sportsman of the Year in the UK, was elected. 2014 she was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

At the beginning of the professional era in tennis in 1968 Ann Haydon -Jones was, together with Billie Jean King to the first players in the women's tennis tour.

In 1970 she was co- commentator for the BBC.

In 1958 she wrote the book " Tackle table tennis this way" (published by Stanley Paul, London).

Career in table tennis

Ann Haydon's father Adrian Haydon participated in 9 World Table Tennis Championships 1928-1953. Ann even played at 5 TT World Championships. Results were best for the left-hander at the World Cup in 1957, when they each came in 2nd place in the singles, doubles and mixed doubles. They lost all finals - something tragic - in 5.Satz. After this World Cup, they shifted the focus on tennis ( " tennis is played outdoors and is therefore healthier for me than table tennis. "), But once again took part in the 1959 TT Championship.
