Anna Creek Station

Anna Creek Station is the largest cattle ranch in the world. It is located in the Australian state of South Australia, covers 23,677 square kilometers (that corresponds almost exactly to the area of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern ), making it several times bigger than the largest farm in the USA.

Originally founded in 1863 as a sheep farm, a short time later converted the operation to cattle, since these animals proved to be more resistant to attacks by dingoes. Owner is the p founded by Sidney Kidman Kidman & Co., a company that also owns other farms. Anna Creek Station is the seat of the central administration of all farm activities of this company.

Since the station is located in a very dry area, small fluctuations of the annual precipitation may already have a large impact. The number of cattle housed on the farm therefore varies greatly from year to year. After a lot of rain up to 18,000 cattle live on the station, in times of great drought, it can happen, however, that the operation must be even ceased. With the number of animals also changes the number of persons employed. Currently (August 2012) 17 people work on the farm.

At the farm include the Anna Creek Painted Hills, whose existence was long kept secret and must not be entered until today. Only overflights are allowed.
