Anna of Savoy

Princess Anna of Savoy (c. 1306, † 1365 in Thessaloniki ) was by marriage Empress of Byzantium and 1341-1347 regent.

Life

Anna, whose baptismal name was Johanna, the daughter of Count Amadeus V the Great of Savoy (1252-1323) and his second wife Princess Marie of Brabant (1278-1338), daughter of Duke John I the Victorious of Brabant - Limburg was and Princess Margaret of Flanders Namur from the house of Dampierre. She was the niece of the Roman- German queen, Margaret of Brabant, and the cousin of the French queen Marie de Luxembourg; and the sister of Duke Leopold I of Austria and Styria.

In 1326 married Princess Anna of Constantinople Byzantine Emperor Andronikos Opel later III. Palaeologus ( 1296-1341 ). From the marriage, which by all accounts was happy, went four children:

  • Irene (1327-1356) ∞ Michael Asen IV of Bulgaria (1322 - 1355)
  • John V Palaiologos (1332-1391) ∞ Princess Helena Cantacuzenus of Byzantium (1333-1396)
  • Michael Palaeologus (1337-1370)
  • Maria ( † 1401 ) ∞ Francesco I Gattilusio ( 1330-1384 ), Patrician of Genoa and regent of Lesbos

After the death of her husband she took over the regency for her son. Counter in 1346 seized the regent the defense of St.. Gregory Palamas, which contributed decisively to the recognition of his Doctrine of the Faith in 1351. 1351 Empress Anna moved back to Salonika and died as a sister Anastasia in the monastery.
