Geography

Annaberg is located in the Most district in Lower Austria. Geologically, the area belongs to the Lower Austrian Limestone Alps. The area of ​​the municipality covers 63.48 square kilometers. 81.47 percent of the area is forested.

In several sharp bends, the Mariazellerstraße B 20 leads from Türnitz to Annaberg. It has in this case a slope of up to 12%.

History

In ancient times, the area was part of the province of Noricum. In the core Austrian state of Lower Austria lying the place told the eventful history of Austria.

The area around Annaberg came in 1202 through a donation of Leopold VI. to the Cistercian Abbey of Lilienfeld. Already in 1207 began Abbot Gerhard to make the 976 m high mountain saddle arable. Ten years later there was a fixed settlement and a chapel, which was dedicated to St. Anne. In 1327 this was expanded due to the numerous visits of pilgrims. 1380 Annaberg was elevated to a parish.

During the Thirty Years War in 1639 the whole town was destroyed by a fire, and rebuilt with the help of donations of the Emperor Ferdinand II and his wife Eleonora Gonzaga. Especially in the 18th century, there were also lively mining activity, such as the silver mine in the village of enamel. Furthermore, lead, gypsum and coal was still mined.

The opening of the Mariazell Railway in 1907 finally brought the era of tourism.

Religions

About two-thirds of the population is Roman Catholic ( parish Annaberg ), and a third committed to the Evangelical Church AB (as part of the Protestant parish Mitterbach ).
