Annibale Caro

Annibale Caro ( born June 19, 1507 Civitanova Marche, Marche, † November 21, 1566 in Rome ) was an Italian poet.

Life

Annibale Caro was born in 1507 as the son of poor parents in Civitanova Marche. After finishing school and graduating, he worked as a teacher in the house of the wealthy Florentine Ludovico Gaddi. After some time, Caro joined as secretary to Cardinal Giovanni Gaddi, a brother of his previous employer. With Cardinal Gaddi Caro went to Rome and led its business so well that he was rewarded with several lucrative benefices. This revenue helped Caro to live a carefree life and to maintain Rome's handling of the most eminent scholars and writers.

1543 died Cardinal Gaddi and Caro joined the services Pier Luigi Farnese, who two years later Duke of Parma and Piacenza was. Initially involved in the management, Caro was soon in political and diplomatic missions on the way; inter alia, to the Emperor Charles V.. As 1547 Caro employer was murdered, he worked in the same mission for Cardinal Farnese Ranuccio, but switched after a short time to Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, where he also served as secretary. At the age of 59 years Annibale Caro died on November 21, 1566 in Rome. He is buried in the church of San Lorenzo in Damaso.

Reception

Caro no longer belongs to the most famous writers of Italy, but his literary work was once - counted among the classics - only the language and the style for. Especially the Tuscan language found in Caro's works despite a dispute with Lodovico Castelvetro wide precipitation.

His humor was almost proverbial, and was based inter alia on his treatise Diceria de ' nasi ( over the nose of a friend ) and La Ficheide del P. Siceo col comento di Ser agresto, with the Caro 's work Capitolo de' Fichi of writer Francesco Maria Molza commented. These two works were also the only ones that were published during his lifetime Caro.

No less was known Caro's Aeneid, a translation of Virgil's work in blank verse. From his own works, the sonnets by audiences and critics found the greatest recognition.
