Annie Llewelyn-Davies, Baroness Llewelyn-Davies of Hastoe

Annie Patricia Llewelyn -Davies, Baroness Llewelyn -Davies of Hastoe, nee Perry, former Rawdon Smith ( * July 16, 1915 in Birkenhead, † 6 November 1997 in Colchester ) was a British politician. She was the first woman in each case Chief Whip in both the House of Commons as the House of Lords and was during the Labour Government from 1974 to 1979 Captain of the Gentlemen -at-Arms.

Early years and Private

Annie Llewelyn -Davies was born as Annie Parry. She graduated from Girton College, Cambridge. In 1934 she married Alexander Francis Rawdon Smith, a physiology researcher. The marriage remained childless and ended in divorce. In 1943, she married Richard Llewelyn Davies. When this was raised to life peer, the surname was provided with a hyphen. The couple had three daughters.

Political career

1940 Annie Llewelyn -Davies joined the public administration and was in the Ministry of War Transport, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Commonwealth Relations Office operates. Three times she ran unsuccessfully for the British Parliament. In 1967, she was raised to life peer with the title Baroness Llewelyn -Davies of Hastoe in the County of Hertfordshire. Between 1969 and 1970 she was Group President ( Chief Whip ) of the Government in the House of Lords from 1972 and Chief Whip of the Opposition. So she was the first woman who held this office in both houses of parliament. When the Labour Party came in government again, it was in 1974 Captain of the Gentlemen -at-Arms (Government Chief Whip ) and 1975 Privy Council ( Privy Privy Council ). From 1979 to 1982 Annie Llewelyn -Davies was again Chief Whip of the Opposition from 1982 to 1987 and Principal Deputy Chairman of Committees in the House of Lords, a position that was synonymous with the Chairman of the European Communities Committee.

Death

Annie died on 6 November 1997 at the age of 82 years in Colchester in the house of the former Conservative minister Lord Alport, who had cared for in her last years. The couple had their relationship that it had entered into in 1983 after the death of his previous partner, kept secret since Annie Llewelyn -Davies was afraid it would Cuthbert Alport hurt politically. Therefore, they also had refused to marry him. Alport died a few months after her.
