Quotes

"Everyone, even every unbaptized interested, can ... in, Annuario Pontifical ' ( which, who is who ' of the world church) look up any bishop, including resume and phone number. "

" The most important book in the Vatican, the book of books in the Papal States, weighs 1320 grams heavier than most Bibles, has more pages - namely, in 2397 - and is a marvel of precision and perfection. ... It's the, Annuario Pontifical ', the ... Compendium of the Vatican, at the same time the directory, services directory, chronicle, Yearbook, curial instructions and official, Who is Who ' ... The work is to be obtained for 65 euros at the Libreria Editrice Vaticana and is in cardinal red linen bound with ribbon bookmark and a golden emblem on the cover.

In here all important addresses, phone numbers and email addresses are listed. The handy tome begins with a signed gravure photo of the Pope and ends with the flirtatious request that they notify etwaig necessary corrections to the Secretariat of State. Of course, comes the practically never. After all, there is the book for quite a while. The first edition was 1716. At that time the Roman family of printers Cracas had the idea to publish a yearbook, in which the venerable exponent of the Catholic hierarchy were listed. "

"Those who, however, had believed with the choice of name of the Holy Father [ Pope John XXIII. ] And the official eradication of the medieval anti-Pope were all Numerierungsprobleme the Pope's history solved, had to by the recently published, Pontifical Yearbook for the year 1961 ' ( " Annuario be taught Pontifical " ) better.

This book does not have 22, but only 20 real predecessor of the present Pope, which have the name John served:

  • John XVI. ( 997-998 ) is only listed as an anti-pope, and a
  • John XX. there has never been; because on John XIX. ( 1024-1032 ) was followed by a John XXI. ( 1276-1277 ).

Even earlier yearbooks had pointed to this Numerierungsschwierigkeiten in St. John series. [ ... ] In fact, would the current Holy Father until the 21st John. The Vatican doubts, however, that ... the computation error of his predecessor name to be corrected.

Against such a correction speaks mainly that the yearbook editors can be reluctant to shake their Pope sequence and there are usually only after centuries to changes ready.

In the yearbook of 1946 Kletus for example, was still known as the third pope (78 to 90). As a fifth Pope introduced this year a book on Anakletus (100 to 112). However, the, Annuario ' from 1947 united both popes to a person: the third pope was now called as desired Anakletus or Kletus and enthroned 76-88 to the Holy See.

A similar problem is solved, the historian of the Vatican now for another Pope row: Stephen II, who was elected on March 23, 752 to the Pope, but only three days later, before ordination, died, was deleted from the Stephan - series because in those days no choice, but only the office was decisive for the Pope succession. The Popes of modern times, however, be - about themselves, Annuario' editors and historians agree -. Enqueued already on the day of their choice in the list of the Successor of Peter "

"Less tractable, the Vatican gave for many years when it came to recognizing limits: The Roman headquarters recorded the former German territories in their official Pontifical Yearbook ' among the German dioceses.

But that changed since the Pope 's five bishops of the Federal Republic, whose diocesan areas protrude over the past year in the GDR, which withdrew jurisdiction over their East German parts. The episcopal commissioners employed in these areas, he turned directly to the Vatican by having them appointed to the apostolic administrators.

Im Pontifical Yearbook 1974, the changes read: The Apostolic Administrators Heinrich Theissing ( Schwerin ) and John Brown ( Magdeburg ), which each manage the eastern parts of the West German bishoprics of Osnabrück and Paderborn, without any reference only among their Titularsitzen Mina and Puzia di Bizacena listed: Under Osnabrück Paderborn or no reference.

Similarly, the Apostolic Administrator of Erfurt, Meiningen, Hugo Aufderbeck, no longer, as in the previous year, referred to as Auxiliary Bishop of Fulda. Even the Bishop of Meissen, Gerhard sheep Fran, no longer works, as in, Annuario Pontifical 1973 ', in Germany, but in the GDR. The theological faculty Wroclaw ( Breslau) was already in the past, Annuario ' under Poland, as well as the bishopric of Gdansk ( Danzig). "
