Anorthosis Famagusta FC

Anorthosis Famagusta FC (Greek: Ανόρθωση Αμμοχώστου to German: restoration of Ammochostou ) is a Cypriot football club, originally from Famagusta, but currently plays in Larnaca.

History

Start-up phase

The club was founded on 30 January 1911 in Famagusta. After the north of Cyprus has been occupied by Turkey in 1974, Anorthosis moved his club seat to Larnaca.

The team has won in its history 13 league titles and ten cup wins. A significant achievement for the club and also for the Cypriot football history succeeded in 2005, when they defeated in the second round of qualifying for the Champions League the Turkish representative Trabzonspor 3-1. Since the return match went 0-1 and thus only lost by one goal, one reached the third round. There, the club but failed with two defeats at Glasgow Rangers.

Season 2008/ 09

In the 2008 /09 season Famagusta could advance to the group stage of the Champions League under the Georgian coach Temur Kezbaia. After they had to kick the Armenian club FC Pjunik Yerevan off, it came in the second qualifying round to a meeting with the Austrian champions SK Rapid Wien. In the first leg on 30 July 2008, the Cypriots attended with a 3-0 victory over Rapid for a surprise. Despite a 1:3 defeat in the return leg a week later in Vienna, Famagusta prevailed with a total score of 4:3 and reached the next round. The first leg of the third qualifying round tie against Olympiakos Piraeus Greece could Famagusta in front of a home crowd once again won 3-0 for itself. The second leg of the club lost 0-1 and reached a total score of 3-1, the main round of the Champions League, which is the largest ever success of the club's history.

There, the club has been drawn in Group B with Inter Milan, Werder Bremen and Panathinaikos Athens. The first group stage match against Werder Bremen ended 0-0 and the second game - the first home of Famagusta in the Champions League - was won with a 3-1 victory over Panathinaikos, followed by a 0:1 at Inter Milan. A surprise succeeded Famagusta on Matchday 4, as one at home against Inter Milan twice a residue and even caught up in the meantime led 3-2. The game finally ended 3-3. Matchday On Anorthosis sealed by the resignation of a 2-2 Werder Bremen in the Champions League, led in this encounter between time 2-0. On the final day Famagusta lost in Athens, while Werder won. Thus Anorthosis Famagusta was retired from both international competitions.
