Ansonia is a city in New Haven County in the U.S. state of Connecticut. The city lies on the Naugatuck River.

History

Ansonia was founded in 1652 by Anson Greene Phelps and, a philanthropist named. Originally Ansonia was one of Derby. The city suffered on August 19, 1955 by Hurricane Diane massive destruction. In the decades after the hurricane Ansonia experienced a recession. In recent years, the economy recovered after the opening of several new shops again.

Population and demography

According to the census of 2000 Ansonia had 18,554 inhabitants, distributed among 7,507 households. The population density was 1,188 inhabitants / km ². 85.52 % of the population were white, 8.42% African American and 7.42% were Latinos.
