Antal Doráti

Antal Doráti [ ɒntɒl dora ː ti ], KBE ( born April 9, 1906 in Budapest, † November 13, 1988 in Gerzensee, Switzerland ) was a Hungarian- American conductor and composer.

Biography

Doráti started as a coach at the Royal Opera in his native Budapest. 1924 to 1928 he assisted Fritz Busch at the Staatsoper in Dresden, before he took up a job in 1928 as assistant conductor at the Municipal Theater of Münster. Starting in 1934, followed by Music Director offices with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and, from 1942 to 1945, the American Ballet Theatre. After that, he was permanent conductor of various orchestras:

  • Dallas Symphony Orchestra ( 1945-48 )
  • Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra ( 1949-60 )
  • BBC Symphony Orchestra ( 1963-66 ), which has also performed some of his works
  • Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra ( 1966-70 ), with whom he has recorded several of his works.
  • National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. ( 1970-77 )
  • Detroit Symphony Orchestra ( 1977-81 )
  • Royal Philharmonic Orchestra ( 1975-79 ).
  • Philharmonia Hungarica ( Honorary President )

He conducted the world premiere of the completed by Tibor Serly viola concerto by Béla Bartók (1949 ) and produced numerous recordings, including works by Joseph Haydn (among all 108 symphonies ), Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály.

Since 1969 he was married to the pianist Ilse of Alpine home. 1983 struck him Queen Elizabeth II knighted.
