Antarctic Protected Area
A protected area is an area of Antarctica ( including marine areas ) south of 60 ° south latitude, which is particularly protected by the Antarctic Treaty. According to Annex V to the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty " Conservation and Management of areas " of 1991, there are in Antarctica three types of protected areas:
- Specially protected area of Antarctica ( Antarctic Specially Protected Area - ASPA )
- Specially Managed Area Antarctic ( Antarctic Specially Managed Area - ASMA )
- Historic sites and monuments ( Historic Site and Monument - HSM)
Currently, there are 72 ASPA, ASMA 7 and 81 HSM.
