Ante Starčević

Ante Starčević listen / i (* May 23, 1823 in Žitnik in Gospic, Empire Austria, † February 28, 1896 in Zagreb, Austria - Hungary)? Was a Croatian nationalist politician, journalist and author.

In addition to his political work, he dealt more with history, philology, book reviews, philosophy, poetry, plays and political satire ( Pisma magjarolacah ). In the fall of 1845, he is a high school at the Gymnasium in Zagreb, then he went to Senj to be a priest, from there he went to plague and begins to study theology. There he decides against the priesthood and begins the struggle for a free Croatia. After he can not get a teaching position at the University of Zagreb, he worked until 1861 in the office of the lawyer Šram (possibly Schramm ). This year he was appointed notary of the county Rijeka, but suspended in 1862 and condemned as enemies of the regime to one month in prison. In the same year he is in the Croatian Parliament, as the representative of Rijeka, seconded. He is a parliamentarian in 1865, 1871, and from 1878 until his death, re-elected.

In the Croatian Parliament, he was the most ardent advocate of Croatian independence, he defended himself vigorously against any relations between Croatia and Austria - Hungary. His behavior began the foundation of the Croatian Party of Rights, which he founded together with Eugen Kvaternik. From his first lines from 1861 to his last speech had Starčević full 30 years tirelessly pointed out that it was the most important thing to secede from the Austrian domination, since it at least not for the Croatian people under this no survival or happy future give. He took a strong repellent, hostile position against the " arrogant " imperialism Austria. The greatest enemy of the Croatian people, he described the Habsburg dynasty.

1863 Starčević is arrested again. After his release from prison he worked until October 1871 again at the law firm SRAMs. After the rebellion Eugen Kvaterniks in Rakovica he was arrested again, and dissolved the party of the right. In 1878 he is re-elected deputies in the Croatian Parliament, where he remains deputy until his death in 1896. Starčević several years was referred to by the clergy as an insurgent, even as Antichrist, which disregards the commandments of God, the people and the church. Ante Starčević died on 28 February 1896 in Zagreb at the age of 73 years. It is still highly regarded in Croatia and is also referred to as the "Father of the Nation".
