Features

The Yellow Orange Tip looks very similar to the Orange Tip ( Anthocharis cardamines ). Unlike this kind, however, the males have taken a white, a yellow color on both sides of the pairs of wings. In females, only the wing undersides are partly yellow. They have, however, unlike the females of the Aurora butterfly orange wing tips, but they are less extensive than in the male. Due to this feature, but they can be confused with the slightly larger Eupheme Zegris whose circulation area overlaps in Spain. The tip, however, is only cored orange in females of similar type and otherwise drab. Colotis evagore can also be confused with the Yellow orange tip, but can differ by the non- gray-green mottled undersides of the hind wing.

Occurrence and habitat

The animals are found in the Iberian peninsula, but absent in the southwest and northeast. The distribution also extends over the south of France, from the eastern Pyrenees up to Alpes -Maritimes and Italy in the Abruzzo. Few evidence is there from Switzerland ( southern Ticino ), the style is there but not down to earth, but can be described only as Irrgast. The species colonized open and floriferous areas, such as semi-arid grassland, rocky steppes and more extensive clearings in dry forests. They are found beyond even on sunny forest roads and in open olive groves. The species occurs in mountain areas of up to 1800 meters above sea level.

Way of life

The females lay their eggs in the spring at the flower stalks of the caterpillar food plants. They are at first yellow, then red in color and have an elongated shape. The caterpillars feed exclusively on the flowers and fruits of Brillenschötchen ( Biscutella ) and rarely rauks ( Sisymbrium ). The adults fly in accordance with the flowering time of these plants in the Mediterranean in early March, the north of it from April. In the mountains, the flight time ends in late June. The caterpillars often eat other dogs and caterpillars of other species, if they live on the same food plants.
