Anthony Cary, 5th Viscount of Falkland

Anthony Cary, 5th Viscount Falkland PC ( * February 16, 1656, † May 24, 1694 ) was a Scottish peer and English politicians. According to him, the Falklandsund was named, which in turn was named for the entire archipelago of the Falkland Islands.

Falklands father was Henry Cary, 4th Viscount Falkland. This already died in 1663, so that Cary inherited his title.

Cary was 1685-1694 several times a member of the Parliament of England, first from 1685 to 1687 in Oxfordshire, then from 1689 to 1690 for Great Marlow, and finally from 1690 to 1694 for Great Bedwyn. This was possible because the noble title in the Peerage of Scotland was and was not automatically connected to a seat in the House of Lords. He was also responsible 1681-1689 as Treasurer of the Navy for the financing of the Royal Navy. After he was appointed to the Privy Council in 1692, Cary was 1693 to his death as First Lord of the Admiralty, the highest-ranking civilian in the Royal Navy.

Cary was married and had a daughter, but who died before him. His title was made after his death, to a second cousin.
