Anthracotherium is an extinct genus of the order Artiodactyla ( Artiodactyla ) that lived from the Early Oligocene to the lower Miocene. The name is based on the discovery of its fossilized remains in anthracite coal and is the namesake for the group of Anthracotheriidae.

Features

Externally Anthracotherium looked like a hippopotamus and also reached its proportions. Although the head was pig -like, Anthracotherium is not even distantly related to pigs. The limbs were short and not suitable for fast running. The skull was very large in proportion to body.

Way of life

You may Anthracotherium lived semi - aquatic. It had no defenses and was therefore a relatively easy prey for predators. As it fed on, is not exactly busy, but one suspects a herbivore diet.
