Antichrist is the fifth studio album by British heavy metal band Akercocke. It is stylistically the most part the Death and Black Metal to you, and was released on 28 May 2007 by the record label Earache Records. It was produced and recorded by the band members Jason Mendonca and Matt Wilcock in London, the mix was made by Karlos Bareham with the assistance of Adrian Breakspear. The music on the album was written in large part by drummer David Gray, only The Dark Inside was created in collaboration with Jason Mendonca and the final acoustic piece Epode written by Peter Benjamin. Benjamin had replaced the former bassist Peter Theobalds shortly before the album recordings.

The nachgesprochene Quote " I Believe When I did that, I shall rot, and nothing of my ego shall survive. " From the song axiom comes from the British philosopher and mathematician Bertrand Russell.

Title list

The last two pieces are only available in limited edition of 8000 copies special edition of the album. These are cover versions of death metal bands Morbid Angel and Death, and come in the original albums of the Altars of Madness or Leprosy.

Style

Compared to the previous album Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone, the band gave up on long songs. Some of the pieces included in addition to the guttural vocals otherwise typical for the band clear vocals. In addition, the band used unusual elements of electronic music, Industrial and acoustic music in some songs. Lyrically, the band Antichrist focuses mainly on criticism of organized religion.

The album cover is kept uniform dark green. Thereupon only band name and album title in white letters, and in the center a black and white collage are composed of excerpts of various photographs of people, animals and trees.

Reception

The album was well received by critics to very good. Eduardo Rivadavia awarded for Allmusic three and a half stars out of five and called the music " inspired and versatile ." Similarly, the conclusion of Volkmar Weber in the magazine Rock Hard fell out, he called the band " contrasty, provocative [ and ] stylish " and stated the band is " visionary, yet extremely to the core " and have as opposed to bands like Ulver, Manes and Arcturus " the metal not far off ."
