Antico Caffè Greco

Antico Caffè Greco, short Caffè Greco, is one which has existed since the mid-18th century café near the Spanish Steps and Via Condotti. It was one of the last great artists cafes in Rome.

History

The café was founded by a Greek, which explains its name. Since 1760 there met foreign, often German painters, poets and other artists. This was facilitated by the proximity of the café to the diplomatic missions of France and Spain, as well as numerous hotels. A description from 1804, according to it was then in a simple style a restaurant. The most famous guest was probably Johann Wolfgang von Goethe during his stay in Rome. The Austrian painter Ludwig Passini (1832-1903) in his image artist in Cafe Greco displayed in Rome from 1856 some fellow artists like William cons. The image is located in the Hamburg Kunsthalle.

The Italian Culture Ministry said the cafe to "Monument of historical and national interest ".
