Antisthenes of Rhodes

Antisthenes (Greek Ἀντισθένης ) of Rhodes was an ancient Greek historian who lived around the year 200 BC.

He was heavily involved in the politics of Rhodes and wrote a universal scale representation of his age, which was evaluated by Polybius very positive. He also wrote a report on the battle of Lade (201 BC) and, according to Polybius, was a contemporary of these events.

It is likely that he is the one historian Antisthenes, one of the frequent successions in the Hellenistic (Greek: Διαδοχὴ ) has written of Greek philosophers, which is so often mentioned and quoted by Diogenes Laertius.

The fragments are collected in: The fragments of Greek historians, No. 508

Other possible additions

Antisthenes could also be identical to the Peripatetic philosopher, who is mentioned in Phlegon of Tralles. Plutarch mentions a Antisthenes, who wrote a work called Meleagris from which he quotes the third book; Pliny mentions a Antisthenes, who has written about the pyramids. In the Suda, a Antisthenes is mentioned as a possible author of a work entitled Magikos. In modern research, the identification of these authors with the historian is in any case considered probable.
