Antoine Hamilton

Anthony Hamilton, comte Hamilton ( * 1645 in Roscrea, Tipperary, Ireland, † April 21, 1720 in Saint- Germain -en- Laye, France) was a French lieutenant general and writer of Scottish origin.

Anthony Hamilton was the brother of Elizabeth Hamilton, " La Belle Hamilton ," the wife of the French Count Philibert de Gramont. His father was Sir George Hamilton Bt and his mother, Mary Butler, sister of the 1st Duke of Ormonde.

Hamilton grew from his fourth until his fourteenth year in France, where his father had taken refuge after the execution of Charles I of England. Anthony joined the French army, fought in the French -Dutch War of Louis XIV and eventually became French count and lieutenant general. After the accession of James II of England (1685 ) he received in 1687 an Irish regiment, was Governor of Limerick and a member of the privy council. After the lost battle of the Boyne, where he had attended, he had to go into exile in France and followed King James to Saint -Germain -en- Laye again.

The rest of his life he lived mainly at the court of Saint- Germain -en- Laye on and took care of dealing with the other exiled Stuart supporters.

He is known for his Mémoires du comte de Grammont ( correct: Philibert de Gramont ), the memoirs of his brother, which he published in 1713 in London anonymously and a vivid picture of court life, especially by the amorous escapades and scandals in the 17th century drawing. They were, inter alia, 1866 in Paris by Sainte -Beuve reissued.

His brother Sir George Hamilton also stood as maréchal de camps ( Major General ) in the French service.
