Antoine of Navarre

Antoine de Bourbon, duc de Vendôme ( German Anton of Bourbon ) ( April 22, 1518 *, † November 17, 1562 in Les Andelys ) was the first prince of the blood of one of the senior members of the French royal family since 1555 and titular King of Navarre.

Life

He was the eldest son of Duke Charles de Bourbon, duc de Vendôme and married 1548 Joan of Albret, daughter and heiress of Henry II of Navarre.

Henry IV of France was his second son. With his brother Louis I de Bourbon, he was the leader of the Huguenot - Bourbon compound against the Guises, but was arrested and after the death of Francis II freed ( 5 December 1560) and to the waste of the Chiefs of Catholicism his coreligionists moved. Anton was hereupon Governor General of the Empire, to the Catholic triumvirate of Duke François de Lorraine, duc de Guise, the Constable of Montmorency and the Marshal of Saint -André joined, fought against the Huguenots, Bourges took and laid siege to 1562 Rouen. On the effects of a wound received here he died on November 17, 1562 in Les Andelys.
