Antoine Vergote

Antoon Vergote ( born December 8, 1921 in Kortrijk, Flanders, † October 10, 2013 in Leuven), also known as Antoine Vergote, was a Belgian priest, psychologist and theologian.

Life and career

Vergote was one of the pioneers of the psychology of religion in Europe and has founded, among others, the Center for Psychology of Religion of Leuven (Belgium ) and passed. He was a doctor of theology and philosophy, has worked as a psychoanalyst in his life and co-founder of the Belgian school of psychoanalysis.

The timeliness of the considerations Vergotes arises not only from the impassable embossing through the psychic processes in each of us, especially through the Oedipus problem. It also relates to their contribution to the dialogue between faith and contemporary culture, their emphasis on the structuring role of fatherhood in a context in which this role is in a crisis, and its contribution to the thought of the specific feature and the essence of biblical faith in inter-religious context.

The consideration of psychoanalysis has led to Vergote, again and again to emphasize the essential dimensions of the relationship with God, did not consider the metaphysical theology sufficient: the adoption of a child; the structuring role of the paternal law and the conflictuality that it implies; the theologal intersubjectivity; revelation as speech act.
