Anton Buttigieg

Anton Buttigieg ( born February 19, 1912 in Qala / Gozo; † 5 May 1983) was a Maltese politician, writer and 1976-1981 President of Malta.

First study and professional activities

Buttigieg studied law at the University of Malta and graduated in 1934 with a Bachelor of Arts. In 1940 he graduated as Doctor of Laws ( LL.D. ).

During the Second World War, he was from 1942 to 1944 police inspector. He then worked as a lawyer. In addition, he was from 1946 to 1948 court reporter and Leitartikelautor the " Times of Malta ". From 1959 to 1970 he was editor of the newspaper "The Voice of Malta ".

Political career

Member of Parliament

Buttigieg was first elected as a member of the Labour Party in 1955 in a by-election as member of the House of Representatives. This mandate he retained until his mandate waiver in October 1976. As such, he was in 1958 and 1964 a member of delegations to London to develop a Maltese Constitution. From 1967 to 1971 he was a member of Konsultativversammlung of Europe and their elected Vice- President in the period 1967 until 1968.

Deputy Prime Minister

1959-1961 was Buttigieg President and then from 1962 to 1976 Deputy Leader of the Labour Party. When the Maltese Labour Party (MLP ) with Dom Mintoff on June 21, 1971, the government again, Buttigieg was appointed by the latter to the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.

President of Malta

On December 27, 1976, he was elected to succeed Sir Anthony Mamo 's second president of the Republic of Malta. This office he held until the end of the five-year term on December 27, 1981. Successor as President was Albert Hyzler.

Writer

Anton Buttigieg was also active since his student days as a writer and poet. For his literary work, he received several awards. As a poet, he sat down in particular and for the use of the Maltese language. He was on 26 January 1931 Foundation member of the Association of University Students for the Maltese language and since March 20, 1938 Member of the Academy of the Maltese language.
