Anton Geiss

Anton Geiss ( born August 11, 1858 in Rettenbachferner; † March 3, 1944 in Schriesheim ) was a German politician of the SPD in Baden.

Life and career

Anton Geiss was born the son of a farm laborer in the Eastern Allgäu. After a carpentry apprenticeship and journeyman years through Germany and Switzerland, he settled down in 1891 in Mannheim. There he worked for several years as a freelance carpenter. In 1895 he took over a tavern and was able to make his party a private meeting place available.

Policy

1891 Anto Geiss joined the SPD in 1908 he was elected chairman of the Baden SPD. In 1893 he was elected to the Mannheim city council, but dropped out after three years from. In 1907 he was elected again in 1911 he was Director of the City Council. In 1895 he was elected to the state parliament of Baden, where he remained until 1903 and then again from 1909 to 1921.

From November 10, 1918 until April 2, 1919 goat was Chairman of the Provisional Government, and then on April 2, 1919 and August 14, 1920 President and head of government. He was also Minister of Foreign Affairs and Military Affairs. After the center of the strongest parliamentary group urged a new formation of the government, he resigned. He spent his retirement years from 1933 in Schriesheim.
