Anton Josef Gruscha

Anton Josef Cardinal Gruscha (* November 3, 1820 in Vienna, † August 5, 1911 at Schloss Kranichberg, Lower Austria ) was a Roman Catholic Archbishop of Vienna.

Biography

After the son of a craftsman had successfully passed the Matura (Abitur ), Gruscha studied at the Vienna University of Catholic theology.

There he was ordained a priest in 1843 at age 23. As such, he worked for several years in pastoral ministry. During this time he completed his doctoral studies and graduated in 1849 with the title of Doctor of Divinity. from.

Since 1848 Gruscha was also the spokesman for a popular Christian movement in Vienna. He vehemently committed to a free church and, together with Adolph Kolping therefore from 1852 several Catholic journeyman and master associations.

1851 Gruscha was appointed as Professor in the Theresianumgasse. Until 1856, he held this position. In December 1855 he was appointed preacher at St. Stephan's Cathedral. As such, he taught at the same time pastoral theology at the University of Vienna. 1871 chose the chapter Gruscha to their member.
