Anton Margaritha

Anthony or Anthonius or Anton wraparound (* 1492 in Regensburg, † in the spring of 1542 in Vienna ) was a Jewish convert, whose work The gantz judeo believer has long been understood as a source of early modern anti-Jewish writings and the first translation of a Jewish prayer book into German contains.

Life

Anthony wraparound was born around 1492, the son of Rabbi Samuel Margoles in Regensburg. His childhood and youth are completely in the dark recesses of history, so we can only speculate what might have him, influenced his decision to convert to Christianity. A considerable share of it would certainly have had from his hometown in 1519, the expulsion of the Jews. The concomitant destruction of the Jewish quarter and the expropriation of the Jews were euphemistically described as a " preventive measure to protect the Jews."

To 1521/22 he was baptized in Wasserburg am Inn. The offers of his family to win him back by offering money, he struck out all. His livelihood, he played in various cities as a teacher of Hebrew. The Reformers cited wraparound like as experts. But at the Diet of Augsburg, he lost a public disputation against Josel of Rosheim, the former attorney ( " shtadlan " ) of the Jews in the empire. This refuted the suspicion of disloyalty, and supported the emperor against the Protestant estates of the Empire and Elector, because he had recognized Luther's rejection of the Jews. Wraparound had to leave the meeting. Nevertheless, Luther took over in 1543 most of his anti-Jewish stereotypes and receivables.

His pressure history dates to 1713, as a 13th edition appeared. Lange 's work was practically the only source from which the Hebrew could not be appropriated by powerful people in Europe aware of the Jewish religion and prayer practice.
