Anton Rupert

Antony Edward Rupert ( born October 4, 1916 in Graaf -Reinet, † January 18, 2006 in Stellenbosch ) was a South African entrepreneur and billionaire.

Life

Rupert grew up in his birthplace of Graaff-Reinet in the east -Kaap, studied chemistry in Pretoria and moved to Stellenbosch, where he established the Rembrandt Group. He had stopped studying medicine.

After working as a chemistry teacher, he began to manufacture cigarettes in his garage and founded the tobacco conglomerate Rembrandt. Later, Rembrandt ( an investment group ) and Richemont split into Remgro ( a luxury goods holding company). Meanwhile, Rupert's company has several branches in 35 countries on six continents that generate annual revenues of $ 10 billion.

Rupert was involved in environmental protection and the promotion of art. Since 1964, various Rembrandt funds use parts of the company's profits to support education, art, music and Restaurierens historical buildings. Rupert was one of the founders of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

Rupert took part in South Africa's Small Business Development Corporation ( SBDC ), the non profit creates jobs since 1981. Also known as apartheid opponents Rupert came into existence. In 2004 he was elected to the list of 100 greatest South Africans ranked 28th.
