Anton Schindler

Anton Felix Schindler ( born June 13, 1795 in Meedl / Moravia (today Medlov u Uničova ); † January 16, 1864 in Bockenheim ) was an Austrian musician and music writer.

Life

Schindler attended high school in Olomouc ( Olomouc ) and studied from autumn 1813 law and philosophy at the University of Vienna. In 1817 he took a job in the Chambers of Dr. Johann Baptist Bach ( 1779-1847 ), the 1819 Beethoven's legal counsel was. From 1822 Schindler was first violinist and orchestra director at Josephstadt theater, from 1825 to 1827 in the same capacity at the Karntnertor theater. From autumn 1827 to spring 1829, he lived with his sister in Pest, then worked from 1832 as music director in Münster and from 1835 to 1840 as musical director of the Aachen Symphony Orchestra as well as a pin conductor at the Aachen Cathedral. 1841/42 he lived in Paris, 1843 in Berlin, and lived from 1848 in Frankfurt am Main and in Bock 's home.

Schindler's fame is based primarily on his acquaintance with Ludwig van Beethoven. He met him in the fall of 1822 and took over for him secretary services. He was also the first biographer of the composer. His Beethoven biography was published in 1840 and 1860 expanded. It is considered very unreliable since Schindler himself likes to put themselves at the center. His claim that he was Beethoven's friend, is also leaves little to bring the facts in line. To substantiate this, he did not flinch before to make subsequent entries in Beethoven's conversation books and falsifying other documents.

In addition, Schindler wrote several compositions, including songs, piano pieces, a string quartet and two Masses for choir and orchestra. Had great success especially his Mass No. 1 in D minor, which arrived in December 1837 in Aachen for the premiere. The Aachen correspondent Berlinischen News reported:

" Aachen. A major new exhibition of the Concert Master Schindler, during their performance Sämmtliche musicians and music lovers participated, has made a great sensation here, especially the Creed, which was universally admired. "

Another performance was followed on 4 November 1839 in the Church of St. Charles. Schindler dedicated the Mass, Pope Gregory XVI. , Who accepted the dedication before the Vienna performance. In a report from Dusseldorf states in November 1839:

" ( Düsseldorf. ) The pope has accepted the dedication of an exhibition of our music directors Schindler, and the Director of the Pontifical Chapel should have asked the Master to send another zweyte composed on him fair to Rome. "

In the contemporary press it attracted great attention because " never the work of a German composer in St. Peter's Church in Rome was still running. " Whether Giuseppe Baini, the conductor of the papal chapel, Schindler's fair actually aufführte in St. Peter's Basilica, is not known.
