Anton Vovk

Anton Vovk ( born May 19, 1900 in Vrba, † July 6, 1963 in Ljubljana ) was a Roman Catholic theologian and Archbishop of Ljubljana.

Life

Anton Vovk was born in the region of Carniola ( German Upper Carniola). On June 29, 1923 he was ordained priest. On 15 September 1946 he was ordained Auxiliary Bishop of Ljubljana, on 1 December 1946, Titular Bishop of Cardicium.

On January 20, 1952 Communist youths attacked Bishop Vovk at the station of Novo mesto. They doused him with gasoline and set it on fire. Vovk survived the attack and remained until the end of life drawn by the attack. The perpetrators were convicted by a Yugoslav court to ten days in jail on probation.

On November 29, 1959 Vovk was appointed bishop of Ljubljana. On 22 December 1961 he was a regular archbishop of the Archdiocese of Ljubljana. Vovk died in 1963 in Ljubljana. His successor was the Slovene Jožef Pogačnik theologian ( 1902-1980 ).
