Antonio Bertoloni

Antonio Bertolini ( born February 8, 1775 in Sarzana, Liguria, Italy, † April 17, 1869 in Bologna ) was an Italian botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Bertol. ".

Life and work

Bertoloni first studied medicine and botany at Pavia, which was followed by a degree in medicine in 1796 in Genoa. He practiced as a doctor in Sarzana, taught since 1811 as a professor of physics at the Imperial Lyceum at Genoa, lectured at the University, and in 1815 he was appointed professor of botany at the University of Bologna. 1837 his son Giuseppe Bertolini was successor to the Department of Botany. In 1840 he was elected a member of the Scholars Academy Leopoldina.

He established his reputation by his "Flora italica " (1833-1854 in 10 volumes), which he followed ( in 2 volumes 1858 to 1867 ) a "Flora italica cryptogama ".

Ehrentaxa

To him, the genus of the plant family Bertolonia the Black Mouth family ( Melastomataceae ) and the type bertolonii Ophrys ( Ophrys Bertoloni ) are named in honor.
