Antonio Bioni

Antonio Bioni (* 1698 in Venice, † 1739 in Vienna or Italy ) was an Italian singer and composer, especially creator dramatic operas of the late Baroque.

Life and work

Antonio Bioni, son of a tailor, was a pupil of Giovanni Porta. His first stage work, Climene was listed in 1721 in Chioggia. A year later, his opera Caio Mario was listed in Ferrara with great success. In the same year he wrote an opera for his private theater for Count Franz Anton von Spork in Kuks (Bohemia ).

From 1726 he was a music teacher and companion of an Italian harpsichord opera company in Breslau, which he had joined in Kuks. In 1730 he became director and impresario of the troupe, which was dissolved in 1734. During this time, one after Daniel Gottlieb Treu, who also contributed some operas on the program and Georg Gebel as harpsichordist of the ensemble works. For this ensemble Bioni Breslauer wrote 25 operas, some of which were very successful. The Bishop of Breslau, Franz Ludwig von Pfalz- Neuburg, Elector of Mainz from 1729 also appointed Bioni 1731 to his court composer. In the years 1738 and 1739 some of his compositions, including the opera Girita were performed in Vienna, then lose track of him.

In addition to his stage works are of Bioni only minor works known, including a four -part mass, 3 arias with orchestral accompaniment and a Streicherouverture.
