Reception

The lifting Canovas of 1796 was the model of a lifting of Bertel Thorvaldsen 1806 The lifting Canovas made a great impression on Johann Gottfried Seume, which they saw on his walk to Syracuse in 1802 in Venice, initially as described. :

" Now my soul is full of a single object, of Canova's Hebe. I do not know if you know the amiable goddess of this artist; me it is long, perhaps always dominate. I almost think now that the new have reached the ancients. It should be one of the most recent works of man, the eternal youth. It is in the home Alberici, and the owner seems to feel the full value of the treasure. He has one of the best places of the goddess, a beautiful, bright room after the big channel instructed. I want to, I can no description dare; but I want to prophesy that it will be the beloved of artists and their pilgrimage. I have not yet seen the Mediceerin; but after all the good casts to judge of it, is here more for me than all the " Venere cupidinesque ". "

I got up from sweet intoxication drunk, How sunk in a sea of bliss, With reverence for the goddess there, The hold down on me saw And my soul was in Sparks: Here was enthroned more than Amathusia. I had escaped mortality, And my fire looks absorbed Their eyes look Ambrosia And nectar of the gods Saale; I did not know what was happening: And stands Zeus with his lightning close, Surveying I grabbed the Schaale, With which she hands the deity, And dared reeling now perhaps Even the Alciden mockery to say And with God to strike his reward.

It is no coincidence that was eventually erected on the grounds of the house of Georg Joachim Goschen in Grimsby under the Amicitia Temple (Temple of Friendship ) in a grotto -like depression a cast of Thorvaldsen'schen lifting. After Canova's death, a parish church was in Possagno in the style of the Pantheon in Rome to the plans of the artist by GA Selva and A. Diedo built, the " Tempio Canoviano ".
