Antônio Carlos Gomes

Antônio Carlos Gomes (pronounced ɐtonju kaɾluʃ ɡomiʃ ) ( born July 11, 1836 in Campinas, † September 16, 1896 in Belém ) is the preeminent Romantic composer Brazil.

After he had already emerged early as a composer Carlos Gomes studied since 1860 at the Conservatory of Rio de Janeiro. In 1864 he was at the behest of Emperor Pedro II to Milan, where he became a pupil of Lauro Rossi. In 1866 he passed the exams composition of the Conservatory of Milan. In the following years he lived as a composer in Italy, where many of his operas were performed in the major opera houses. In 1895 he became head of the Conservatory of Belém.

To mark the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America, he composed the anthem Saudação do Brasil. The Oratory Colombo for chorus and orchestra for four centenary of the discovery of America by Columbus is regarded as a key work of Brazilian music history. In addition, Gomes composed a fair canzonettas, male choirs, songs and piano pieces.

Developed in the years 1868 to 1870 opera Il Guarany by Antônio Carlos Gomes considered a milestone in Brazilian music history. It celebrated its world premiere at La Scala and was then played in Europe. Giuseppe Verdi said after the premiere, Gomes begin there, where he himself had ceased ( " Questo giovane comincia dove finisco io " ).
