Antonio Imbert Barrera

Antonio Imbert Barrera ( born December 3, 1920) is a Dominican politician. He was on May 7, 1965 to August 30, 1965 President. In 1967, he survived an assassination attempt.

Life

Antonio Imbert Barrera came from a rich family from the province of Puerto Plata of the island nation. The father died three years after his birth. Barrera grew up with three siblings. After school he worked as a partner and manager of a factory for citrus products. During this time he was employed as governor of Puerto Plata province by the dictator Rafael Trujillo.

Due to the arrest of his brother in 1956, held by the dictator, he joined the resistance. His brother also was a member of a group that fought against the dictator. On 30 May 1961, Antonio Imbert Barrera one of seven men who lie in wait and shot the dictator. Most of the conspirators were arrested and killed. Even the brother of Antonio Imbert Barrera was killed shortly after the assassination of the dictator at the command of his son Rafael in prison. He was glanced up he feared for half a year without penalty, was able to return to public life again.

From January 1962 to February 1963 was Antonio Imbert Barrera member of the State Council under the President Rafael Bonnelly. On 20 December 1962, the Democratic Juan Bosch was won by the new rulers flawless elections. But this government lasted only a few months and was in turn deposed by the army under General WESSIN. Antonio Imbert Barrera himself stood on any of the warring factions themselves and could thus act as a kind of mediator. Because of his involvement in the overthrow of the dictator, he also held a heavily armed bodyguards.

In May 1965 he became politically active again. After unrest and confusion between the right-wing military and the democratically oriented forces, the United States continued to reassure the country that a Marine infantry. This application failed to calm the country and Antonio Imbert Barrera was supported by the leader of the U.S. right-wing military - civilian junta.
