Antonio Magliabechi

Antonio Magliabechi ( also wrong Magliabecchi; * October 23, 1633 in Florence, † July 4, 1714 ) was an Italian scholar, bibliophile, and librarian.

After he had lost his father already 1640 Magliabechi was given by his mother to a goldsmith in teaching. He worked until his 40 years in this profession, but had already appropriated from an early age alongside through self-study not only knowledge of the ancient languages ​​, but also an extensive knowledge literarhistorisches. He collected books and is said to have has a phenomenal memory. After 1673 his mother died, he turned completely to his humanities inclinations.

Michele Ermini, librarian of Cardinal Leopoldo de ' Medici, discovered in him the great scholar, and Marmi employed him in the collection of a library for the Grand Duke of the Duchy of Tuscany, Cosimo III. de ' Medici, whose custodian he was later.

His important collection of books, in whose midst he had lived in his cramped private house in Florence, and the last about 30,000 volumes involved, he bequeathed to the Grand Duke for the establishment of a public library. The collection is particularly valuable ( three-volume catalog of the same Fossi, Florence 1795) because of their numerous manuscripts and old prints. This so-called Magliabechiana in 1859 combined with the Biblioteca Palatina di Firenze ( the grand-ducal library ) for the Italian National Library.

Like his younger contemporary Muratori Magliabechi has self-published several older writings. He corresponded with many famous scholars of his time, including with Leibniz and Christian Daum. A selection of the letters addressed to him was compiled by Giovanni Targioni - Tozzetti (Florence 1745); many other writings can be found in the Correspondance de inédite Mabillon et de Montfaucon avec l' Italie ( Paris 1847, three volumes ).

His last years were spent Magliabechi, who had lived by the motto Scire nostrum reminisci withdrawn in the convent of the monastery of Santa Maria Novella in Florence, where he died and where he is buried. He left his fortune to the poor.
