António Ribeiro

Cardinal António Ribeiro ( born May 21, 1928 in Gandarela de Basto, Portugal, † 24 March 1998 in Lisbon ) was Patriarch of Lisbon.

Life

António Ribeiro studied in Braga, Rome ( Pontifical Portuguese College ), Innsbruck and Munich, the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology. He received on 5 July 1953, the sacrament of Holy Orders in Braga and was then released for the purpose of further studies. Ribeiro received his doctorate in 1959 in Rome with a thesis on Thomas Aquinas. He then worked as a lecturer in Braga at the seminary and at the Institute of Social Sciences. He was also temporarily a lecturer at the theological faculties of Innsbruck and Munich. In the years 1966 and 1967 he served as vicar general of the diocese of Braga management.

On July 3, 1967, Pope Paul VI appointed him. Titular Bishop of Tigillava and Auxiliary Bishop of Braga. He received his episcopal consecration Cardinal Manuel Gonçalves Cerejeira. 1969 António Ribeiro Bishop, 1971 Patriarch of Lisbon. In 1973, Pope Paul VI. as cardinal priest with the titular church of Sant'Antonio da Padova in Via Merulana in the College of Cardinals to. Ribeiro was the youngest cardinal, who was appointed since 1930. He participated in the conclaves of August and October 1978.

António Ribeiro died on 24 March 1998 in Lisbon and was buried in the tomb of Patriarch Monastery of São Vicente de Fora.
