Antonio Sánchez (drummer)

Antonio Sanchez ( born November 1, 1971 in Mexico City) is a Mexican jazz drummer, who now lives in the U.S.. He belongs to the new generation of Latin -derived musicians who have established themselves in the jazz scene in New York.

Life and work

First, Sanchez played with pianist Danilo Pérez and developed in its Latin American Jazz Trio stylistic influence on, for example through the development of the Clave in the 10/4 or 7 /4 time. This development started in the late 1990s and was continued by collaborating with musicians such as David Sánchez ( CD Melaza ) or Sebastian Schunke (CD Symbiosis ). Finally, Pat Metheny discovered on a joint concert the drummer Sanchez and took him into his trio and the Pat Metheny Group. He also toured with Chick Corea, Michael Brecker, Joe Lovano and Charlie Haden. In 2007 he presented his first album as a bandleader, migration; 2013 was followed by New Life ( Cam Jazz ), with David Binney Donny McCaslin and. He also performed at international festivals such as the Modern Drummer Festival Weekend or the Montreal Drum Festival. Since 2006 he teaches at New York University.
