Antonio Sartorio

Antonio Sartorio (* 1620 in Venice, † December 30, 1681 ) was an Italian composer of the Baroque.

Life

Antonio Sartorio was the brother of composer and organist Gasparo Sartorio (1625-1680) and the architect Girolamo Sartorio. His sphere of activity was mainly in Italy and in Hanover. Sartorio was in the 1660s and 1670s one of the leading opera composer in his hometown of Venice. Between 1665 and 1675 he spent the winter in Hanover, where he held the post of Kapellmeister at the court of Duke Johann Friedrich of Brunswick- Lüneburg. For the summer months, he returned to Venice, respectively. In 1676 he became Vice-Kapellmeister at St. Mark's Basilica, and was succeeded by Giovanni Legrenzi. 1677 the opera Antonino e Pompeiano in the theater of S. Salvatore was premiered in Venice, it was long considered lost until 1972 Gloria Rose could find a manuscript of the opera in the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Library.
