Apeiranthos

Aperathos also Apiranthos or Apirathos (Greek Απέραθος, also Απείρανθος or Απίραθος ( m. sg. ) ) Is a mountain village on the Greek Cycladic island of Naxos.

Village

Aperathos lies to the east of the island about 32 km from the town of Naxos on a hill surrounded by vineyards at an altitude of 650 m on the mountain Fanari. Aperathos is the seat of the homonymous locality ( Dimotiki Kinotita Aperathou ' Δημοτική Κοινότητα Απεράθου ), which includes the towns of Azalas, Kanaki, Klido, Lygaridia, Moutsouna and Panermos with a total of 914 inhabitants ( 2011).

Due to partial identical linguistic and cultural circumstances, it is assumed that the Cretans have founded the city in the 10th century. The first written evidence of Aperathos gave the Italian navigator Cristoforo Bondelmonti in the year 1420.

In Aperathos the streets were lined with Naxos marble and creates the masonry with it. The town has two tower houses. The place on Naxos has special significance in that there quality emery is mined.

In Aperathos is the church of the Panagia Apeirathitissa, one of the oldest churches on the island; in it are historical icons.

Museums

In Aperathos are three private museums. A Geology Museum displays a collection of about 200 exhibits ores, rocks, minerals and fossils. The Archaeological museum displays finds from the Stone and Bronze Ages. The History Museum Regional shells, corals, marine animals and bone skeletons are considered.

Land reform

In 1986 there was a grassroots pilot project in Aperathos as Manolis Glezos, a known resistance fighters against the German occupation during the Second World War, was elected chairman of the council. It was a " Consultative Assembly " set up, circumcised the competence of the municipal council and took over the control of the municipality. This political model was abolished due to lack of interest of the population for years. In the town itself developed Glezos a concept to protect against flooding, soil erosion and groundwater.
