Aphidicolin is a tetracyclic diterpene from the fungus Cephalosporium aphidicola Petch, but also occurs in other species.
It inhibits cell division in eukaryotic cells and is therefore an antibiotic. Precisely Aphidincolin reversibly inhibits the replication of the DNA by the DNA polymerase α and δ disabled. The cell will remain in the early S phase.
It is also used in cell culture, in order to synchronize the cells so that all cells in the same cell cycle stage is.
