Apianus (crater)

Apianus is an impact crater in south-central highlands of the Moon. The crater is located northeast of Aliacensis and northwest of Poisson. At the northwestern edge immediately adjacent to Krusenstern.

The outer, especially northeastern edge of the crater is formed by further strikes and covered with several small craters sinks. The southeastern edge shows signs of erosion. The central crater has a mean diameter of 63 kilometers and a mean depth of 2080 meters. The crater sink on the southeastern edge, Apianus B, is part of a group of adjacent sinks that include Apianus T and U Apianus. The inner base of the central crater is nearly smooth, slightly convex and without charging. The flat surface is broken only by minor impacts.

The crater is from the era nektarischen billion years ago, about 3.92 to 3.85.

Apianus is named after the German Renaissance scholar Peter Apianus. The name is officially since 1935 as an international standard and is registered with the International Astronomical Union ( IAU).
