Apollodorus of Pergamon

Apollodorus of Pergamon (c. 105 BC, † 23 BC) was a Greek rhetorician.

Apollodorus probably originated in Pergamon in Asia Minor, where he acquired great reputation as a rhetorician. Later he came to Rome, possibly at the initiative of Gaius Julius Caesar in the 50s. From this he became the tutor of his nephew Octavian determined (later Augustus ), the BC he accompanied to Apollonia in the year 45. He spent his life at probably in Rome, where he was one of the confidants of Augustus. According to Pseudo- Lucian ( Macrobii 23) he was 82 years old.

Apollodorus had numerous pupils, among them the poet Gaius Valgius Rufus, who recorded the teachings of the oral presentations (Latin ) and further led. To Apollodorus was formed an important school of oratory (the " Apollodoreer " ), the state ( the " Theodoreern " ) in sharp contrast to the school of his younger contemporaries Theodoros of Gadara.

The writings of Apollodorus and his students have been lost in the lore. From his rhetorical system, we are only informed by later sources (especially Quintilian and the anonymous Seguerianus ), which require thorough interpretation. In particular, the contrast between the Apollodoreer and Theodoreer played a role in the 1st century BC and AD.
