Apollonius of Tralles

Apollonius of Tralles was a Greek sculptor in the 2nd or 1st century BC

Apollonius was born in Tralles in Caria (near the present city of Aydın, Turkey) and was the son of Artemidorus and student and adopted son of a Menecrates. Together with his brother Tauriskos of Tralles he made a famous marble group representing the brothers Amphion and Zethos that bind her stepmother Dirce to a bull, to make them grind to death. The sculpture later came to Rome and was in possession of Gaius Asinius Pollio.

A huge Roman marble copy of this sculpture, extended by some smaller figures, was rediscovered in 1546 in the Baths of Caracalla and incorporated into the collections of the Farnese family; thus was Apollonius ' motif as Farnesischer bull known. Today, the copy in the National Museum of Naples is issued.
